(4/13/1860 Ostende-11/19/1949 Ostende) (Belgium)
   Painter, etcher, author, and composer. Studied at the Academy in Brussels. Became a founder of the avant-garde group Les XX. Much of his work is darkly fantastic with scenes of death, skeletons, cruelty, and sado-masochism. A few overtly sexual works are known.
